Staying Happy and Healthy this Holiday Season

We have waited all year, and Christmas is finally here! But so often, the holidays leave us feeling overstimulated both physically and emotionally. We want you to enjoy this season to the fullest, so this month, we are continuing our series on staying happy and healthy during the holidays. Last month we delved into hydration and talked about the importance of providing your body with the vitamins and minerals it needs in between all of the sweet treats. This month, we are focusing on the value of rest and mindfulness.

Rest
It’s tempting to stay up decking the halls and preparing the holiday ham, but make sure you are getting enough rest. While you sleep, every part of your body resets. Without proper sleep, your body will not function at its highest level and even one night with less than 6 hours of sleep can affect everything from your mood to your body’s ability to fight off that common cold.

Sleep offers a long list of health benefits including an improved memory, a boosted immune system, and an enhanced mood. Did you know that sleep is even an important factor for maintaining a healthy weight, lowering stress levels (hello holiday to-do list!), improving blood flow and decreasing inflammation? Hey, they don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing!

If you have trouble sleeping, try these tips:

-Go to sleep at the same time every night so your body gets used to the routine.
-Make sure you are sleeping in a dark and comfortable environment with little to no noise.
-Do not overstimulate yourself before bed with activities such as exercise, watching TV, or spending time looking at a computer/phone screen.
-Take supplements such as melatonin, magnesium, and fish oil to naturally help your body fall asleep.
-Limit your intake of caffeine and carbohydrates before bed.

Mindfulness
While the holidays are generally time of happiness and cheer, you can wear yourself out emotionally if you are not careful. Practicing mindfulness can help you remain both mentally and emotionally healthy during the craziness of this season!

So what exactly IS mindfulness? According to Psychology Today, mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment with intention. This means not missing out on the joy of the holidays because of the stress of finding the perfect gift or making your house look perfect for your guests. Psychology Today also notes that mindfulness helps controls our responses by taking pause and choosing how we act. Through mindfulness, you can learn to confront your emotions in a more positive, effective manner. The ritual of mindfulness can have a major impact on our bodies as well. Mindfulness can boosts the immune system, lower stress levels, help decrease inflammation, and increase concentration and productivity.

And just how do you practice mindfulness? According to Dr. Josh Axe, “meditation is like exercise for the brain.” So the more you practice mindfulness, the more you will benefit from its effects. Some people chose to exercise their brain through the use of prayer and meditation. For others, time spent in guided consciousness or exposure to nature help achieve a healthy level of mindfulness. Whatever method you chose, don’t let the stress of the holidays get you down. Be sure to make time for yourself so you can stay happy and healthy this season!
